Day of rest

By Andrew on 7/22/2011 9:14 PM

Hello,

Our work is done and today was our groups day of rest. We take time out for our team to be able to bond away from the pressures that can happen in a work setting. Today after breakfast we went by a popular surf shop for the students to spend some of their parents money and then we took them to a local waterpark. They spent the day getting some sun and sliding down water slides. After supper we came back to the motel and prepared for our paper plate awards. We celebrated the end of our trip and sent them to bed to get ready for the travel home. We are headed home tomorrow morning and we'll see our families tomorrow evening.

A day to remember

By Andrew on 7/22/2011 6:25 AM

Good Morning,It was a late night so this entry is coming late. Yesterday was the last day at the work site. We finished both of our decks a little after noon and were exhausted by the heat if the day. The families that we helped were very grateful of the work we had done and were amazed of the sacrifice our students had to give up to come on this trip. Our students represented Christ, their youth group, their church, their families, and themselves well. We spent the afternoon rolling around in the ocean and walking the boardwalk of Myrtle Beach. After supper we had an inspiring worship serviceabd concluded the evening with our own group time. We talked with our students about change. This year we came to a new destination. There were different challenges we faced that we had to overcome. We talked with the students about how they will come away from this experience changed, whether it is a personal life change or a change I their abilities. From what I've seen this week our group will be coming back changed.Andrew

Last Big Work Day

By Andrew on 7/20/2011 9:16 PM

Hello readers,

I've received many comments concerning our trip and I am grateful that you are all praying for us. Today was our last full work day and it was hot. This week Dewey and I have been getting up early to take a mike run on the beach every day. This morning a number if our students wanted to join us and they about killed us two when we tried to keep up with them. Our decks are near completion and our students are working hard and well together. For lunch today our families we are helping out made us homemade fried chicken with potato salad, dessert, and a five gallon container of sweet tea. It was good! We will finish tomorrow morning then we will be able to relax. Lee got his head shaved last night under his and his parents request, Dewey was more than happy to help out. There has not been any injuries to speak of other than blisters from swinging a hammer.

Hump day

By Andrew on 7/19/2011 9:12 PM

Hello all,

Today was hump day for us. Our second day of work and we are through with the difficult part of our two decks, the foundation. Our students are learning new skills. Most of them have never used a hammer before or power tools. We not only work to get the job done but also teach the students how to do it the right way. Our staff person Meredith is quite impressed with our students willingness to learn, serve, and work together. I have been probing our students about home sicknessand it seems that the parents are missing the students more than the students are missing the parents. The food is good, the motel us good, the view is awesome, the worship is outstanding, and our group is in good spirits.

Day 2 all us well

By Andrew on 7/18/2011 9:31 PM

Hey all,

It was a great day today. We woke up early and had breakfast then went to our job site. We are helping out Mrs. Dimitrius, she lives in a mobile home and we are replacing her deck. Today we split our group into 2 work groups with one group working on Mrs. Dimitrius deck and another group working on a mobile home behind hers building a smaller deck. It started with demolishing the old deck which our students found to be a lot of fun. They learned how to use leverage to move boards. Everyone us safe and they are all in high spirits.

Day 7 Finishing Up

By Andrew on 6/18/2011 7:19 AM

Good morning,

This blog is about 10 hours late due to a long evening. Yesterday our work crews went out to their job sites for the final day. We began with rise and shine and breakfast then seperated into our three groups. We finished our jobs late into the day and did a ballet dance with dinner showers and cleanup to be ready for the evening. In the evening we to our students to the Cleveland Indians game so they could experience a little more about the community. We stood at the left field foul pole and were surrounded by some very passionate Indians fans. We watched the Indians beat the Pirates and then headed back to the mission. We have finished our work and now we get ready for a day of fun.

Day 6 The Day of Rain

By Andrew on 6/17/2011 6:16 AM

Helllo,

Today began as a great day. The students woke up to rise and shine and then a few others needed to wake up to water. Albert and Everett made us eggs and bacon for breakfast and then as we left to go to our job site we failed to realize that Connor was not on the bus. After Connor got to jog 5 blocks we headed off to work. We all were busy at our jobs until lunch came. We decided to visit a pizza place called Angelos. We had Chicago style deep dish pizza that stuffed us. At about 2:30 the rains came and changed our plans for the day. We packed up our job sites and headed back to the mission early. After a wonderful dinner we headed to a small town just outside of Cleveland where they have a pretty waterfall and some good ice cream. While dodging rain clouds we relaxed and enjoyed the presence of our group. We got back to the mission late. Thus why this blog is in the morning and had our devotions and went to bed. What a glorious day!

Day 5 Hump Day

By Andrew on 6/15/2011 7:38 PM

Good Evening, Today is hump day for our missions trip. We have completed half of our work and we are looking downhill at our jobs. Today we split into three work crews with Albert and Vickki leading a group to begin a new project that involves a house that leaks when it rains. Everett's group was able to get a handle on their project today with the codes worked out and a plan to move forward. Their project includes replacing the decking on the proch along with supporting and replacing the 2x6's. The problem they were having had to deal with the supports to the porch roof that had to be jacked up to put them into the correct position. Everett has told me they made good progress today and expect to be done on Friday. My team is working on the three story home that is being painted with e porch replacement. Today we finished most of the painting and we have completed the construction of the porch. We still have to finsh leveling the the steps, paint the porch and install the hand rails. Mary, the woman...
